Another Melvins album, another lineup. The ever changing Melvins this time includes two bass players (Only two? 2016’s Basses Loaded had six.), Steve MacDonald (Redd Kross, OFF!), a mainstay in the band since 2016 and on again, off again bassist Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers).
Pinkus Abortion Technician is named after bassist Jeff Pinkus, who has writing credits all over this album, and the Butthole Surfers album, Locust Abortion Technician. Similarly, the first track covers two songs and the title is a mash up of both of them; James Gang – Stop and Butthole Surfers – Moving to Florida. Other choice covers here are I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles and Graveyard by the Butthole Surfers.
I Want To Hold Your Hand is a playful and grungy take on the song. Stop Moving to Florida is really just two songs and both are done well. The highlight for me here are the originals on the album. “Don’t Forget to Breathe” is a southern doom jam with a carnivalesque banjo and “Embrace the Rub” is a fast chaotic punk song held together by a rockin’ piano.
