Toronto collective Broken Social Scene stormed onto the Canadian music scene with this epic album. With so many musicians at the helm it’s amazing that it didn’t feel like a compilation album. It’s a patchwork of genres and each song is often led by different lead vocalist, or multiple leads, and sometimes no vocals at all and it’s all pieced together with focus and clarity. From start to finish, each song feels like it has a purpose and a place in the album order. It ranges from ambient orchestral pieces, frantic post-rock, sensitive ballads, distorted bubblegum pop, baked surf rock & anything in between.
