Defiant, relatable, unbound and wild. Like a child who refuses to colour in between the lines, Fiona Apple’s fifth album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, refuses to allow her creativity to be held back by the confines of modern pop music. Unlike a child, Apple is all too aware of the confines of modern life and is preaching a way out.
Primal percussion, untamed piano, frequent time signature changes, chanting, singing, stream of consciousness, animal sounds and whatever else Fiona Apple wants; it all comes together like an anthem to the freedom that exists within us all. The heaviness of life can be overbearing and sometimes we all need to break free from the confines of life, relationships, loneliness, home, work or whatever it is that is getting you down.
Fetch the bolt cutters and cut yourself free. Listening to this unbridled act of creativity is as pure joy as dancing like a maniac when nobody is looking.
